Helium (He)
1. Introduction
Helium is an inert, non-toxic, colorless, and tasteless gas. It is the least dense and hardest to liquefy of all known gases. With the lowest boiling point of any element, helium can only be solidified under extremely high pressures. It diffuses easily through solids, is much lighter than air and argon, and is chemically inert with most elements.
2. Applications
- Gas Chromatography: Helium is commonly used as a carrier gas in gas chromatography due to its inert nature and low atomic weight.
- Balloon Inflation: Being lighter than air, helium is widely used to inflate balloons and airships.
- Breathing Mixtures: In deep-sea diving, helium is added to breathing mixtures to make breathing easier and safer, particularly for dives beyond 450 feet.
- Spectroscopy and Analysis: Helium is used in spectrometers, analyzers, and for laser cutting and welding applications.
- Electronics and Semiconductors: It plays a crucial role in the electronics and semiconductor industries.
- MRI Scanning: Helium cools superconducting magnets in MRI machines, allowing them to operate effectively.
- Leak Detection: Helium is effective for detecting leaks in high-vacuum and high-pressure systems due to its small atomic size and high diffusion rate.
