Argon Gas
1. Applications
- Lighting: Argon is used in electric lamps because it does not react with the filament even at high temperatures, unlike nitrogen, which can be less stable in some cases.
- Metal Welding Technology: Argon serves as an inert gas shield in various metal welding technologies, including Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding and Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding.
- Titanium and Reactive Element Production: Argon acts as a non-reactive cover during the production of titanium and other highly reactive elements.
- Semiconductor Manufacturing: Argon is used as a protective gas for growing silicon and germanium crystals.
- Plasma Lamps: Argon is used as the gas in plasma lamps.
- Research and Dating: Argon is employed in research applications such as core sampling and groundwater dating.
- Cryosurgical Equipment: Liquid argon is used in cryosurgical devices to destroy cancer cells.
- Self-Contained Diving Equipment: Argon is used to inflate dry suits due to its inert nature and poor thermal conductivity.
- Welding, Cutting, and Metal Refining: Argon is also used in inert and cleaning processes for tanks and pipelines in pharmaceutical and chemical industries.
