TANSOME® – Korea’s First High-Performance Carbon Fiber Innovation
TANSOME® is South Korea’s first domestically developed high-performance carbon fiber. The name reflects its unique purpose — combining the word "tanning," which refers to the carbonization phase in the production process, with the idea of “something special” to create added value.
Lighter than steel by 75% yet 10 times stronger, carbon fiber is a next-generation material gaining global attention for its ability to improve energy efficiency by reducing weight. With global carbon fiber demand growing by more than 10% annually, its role in future-ready industries is more important than ever.
Containing over 92% carbon, carbon fiber has emerged as a core material for weight reduction in response to increasing global focus on energy efficiency. Hyosung has developed two main grades of its TANSOME® carbon fiber:
- TANSOME® Standard Modulus: Tensile strength of 5.5 GPa and modulus above 250 GPa
- TANSOME® Intermediate Modulus: Tensile strength of 5.5 GPa and modulus above 290 GPa
Together, these products account for over 70% of global market demand and are widely used across aerospace, high-performance industrial sectors, and sports and leisure industries. To meet global demand, which is growing at over 12% annually, Hyosung plans to expand its production capacity beyond the current 2,000 tons, with a strategic goal of becoming the world’s leading carbon fiber manufacturer by 2025.
