Gravity casting is a long-established process used in the production and fabrication of metals and non-ferrous alloy components. It is commonly applied to castings made of aluminum, zinc, or copper to achieve aesthetically pleasing parts with high-quality finishes, while also enabling the production of large-sized components.
1. Characteristics of the Gravity Casting Method:
❀ Gravity casting is a process where molten metal is poured from a metal melting furnace into a mold, filling the mold under the force of gravity without the use of compressed air, vacuum, or centrifugal force. When the metal solidifies under gravity, the final product is obtained.
❀ The molds used in gravity casting are typically made from materials like sand, stone, coal, or gypsum. These materials are chosen for their ease of shaping, resistance to breaking when exposed to high temperatures, and affordability. They are widely available in the market.
2. Process of Gravity Casting:
❋ The first step involves heating the mold and applying a thin layer of a release agent to facilitate mold separation. At this stage, a cooling agent is also prepared to cool the casting after it is removed from the mold.
❋ The second step involves melting the metal and pouring it into the mold until it completely fills all cavities. The metal is typically measured or poured manually using a ladle. In some cases, the alloy is poured into the lower part of the mold, allowing gravity to expedite the filling process and reduce air pocket formation in the mold. This results in stronger and tighter-fitting castings when finished.
❋ Finally, after the casting cools, the mold is opened using mechanical tools or manually. The finished casting is then removed, completing the casting process.
