VML MEASUREMENT STATION
The VML Track and Trace System (a light grid-based volume measurement system) is a widely adopted logistics solution designed to accurately measure the dimensions of goods. This solution has become increasingly essential for companies handling high volumes of imports and exports, particularly in the air freight industry.
The VML measurement station is composed of three main components:
- A sensor to detect when a product enters the measuring station
- Light grids to measure the dimensions of the product
- An encoder to monitor conveyor belt speed
Sensor for product detection
A SICK photoelectric sensor is positioned at the front of the measuring station to detect incoming goods. Once triggered, the sensor sends a signal to activate the system.
Light grids for product dimension measurement
Two pairs of SICK automation light grids are arranged vertically (top-bottom) and horizontally (left-right) to capture the three-dimensional measurements of the object. The station supports volume measurement up to 2500 x 1500 x 1500 mm, with a margin of error of just 5 mm.
Additionally, a blower is installed next to the light grid located beneath the conveyor belt. Its function is to keep the lower grid clean by blowing off any dust or debris. This ensures consistent accuracy by preventing obstructions that could affect measurement results.
Encoder for conveyor speed detection
An encoder is mounted on the conveyor belt to precisely track its speed. This component is crucial - should the conveyor stop during measurement, the encoder’s feedback still allows the system to accurately calculate the object’s length.
The dimensions and measurement time are displayed on SICK’s software interface. These results can be exported via multiple communication ports such as Ethernet, RS232, and others.
The VML Measurement Station is a standalone solution for dimensional measurement. When integrated with a weighing station and a barcode reader, it becomes a complete Dynamic DWS (Dimensioning, Weighing, Scanning) System.
