In modern industries, most chemicals are highly corrosive, requiring storage solutions that can withstand harsh conditions. Traditionally, carbon steel was the go-to material for chemical storage tanks. However, with advancements in material science, fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) – commonly known in Vietnam as composite – has become the preferred choice thanks to its superior properties:
- High corrosion resistance
- Non-conductive
- Lightweight
- Moisture and water resistant
- Fire retardant
While FRP tanks are typically more expensive than carbon steel alternatives, their long-term durability and performance make them a worthwhile investment for many applications.
Construction of Composite Chemical Storage Tanks
► Composite tanks are made by combining two key components:
- Reinforcing fibers: Provide structural strength, resistance to impact, and wear protection.
- Resin matrix: Binds the fibers together and offers resistance to chemical reactions.
► Common reinforcing fiber types:
- Mineral-based fibers: fiberglass, carbon fiber, ceramic fiber
- Heat-resistant synthetic fibers: Nomex, Kermel, Apyeil, Kynol
- Other fibers:
+ Mineral origin: silica, asbestos
+ Natural origin: jute, cellulose, pineapple fiber, coconut fiber
+ Metallic fibers: copper, steel, aluminum
+ Synthetic polymers: polyester (Tergal, Dacron, Terylene), polyamide
Fiberglass often includes minerals such as aluminum, silica, and magnesium, enhancing strength and durability. These fibers are woven and typically measure only a few dozen micrometers in diameter.

- Tensile strength: 8 – 18 kg/mm²
- Specific gravity: 1.4 – 1.9 kg/m³
- Compressive strength: 12 – 22 kg/mm²
- Tensile modulus: 750 – 1500 kg/mm²
- Flexural modulus: 650 – 1500 kg/mm²
- Flexural strength: 20 – 30 kg/mm²
- Ignition temperature: 0.29 – 0.32 kcal/kg°C
- Temperature resistance: -50°C to +120°C
- Linear expansion coefficient: (~15) × 10⁻⁶ /°C
- Thermal conductivity: 0.2 – 0.3 kcal/m·h·°C
Tank Shapes & Sizes
Chemical storage tanks can be designed in various shapes and sizes based on application needs:
► Common tank shapes:
- Vertical or horizontal cylindrical tanks
- Rectangular or square tanks
- Conical, funnel-shaped, or open-top designs
- Box-type or custom geometries
► Tank bottom and roof configurations:
- Flat bottom / inclined bottom / conical bottom / dished bottom
- Flat or domed top (sealed)
- Open-top tanks with 90° flanged rims
► Capacity range: From 1m³ up to 1500m³
Applications of FRP Composite Tanks
FRP composite tanks are widely used to store a variety of aggressive and corrosive chemicals, including:
- Acids: sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), hydrochloric acid (HCl), nitric acid (HNO₃)
- Bases: sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH)
- Other chemicals: solvents, industrial adhesives, dyes, fertilizers, petrochemical products, plating solutions, rubber compounds, etc.
