1. General Information:

❖ PS, HIPS, and EPS plastics are 100% recyclable. They can be used to create items like packaging fillers and serving trays but are not suitable for making cups or food containers.

❖ PS plastic (Polystyrene) is commonly used in the production of plastic boxes, plastic cups, plastic bowls, and plastic candy trays due to its hardness, brittleness, lightweight nature, and ease of shaping.

2. Characteristics:

• PS plastic is exceptionally clear, resembling natural glass.
  
• It has a density of about 1.05 g/cm3.
  
• When burned, it produces a yellow-orange flame with black soot.
  
• Polystyrene is hard and brittle with low impact strength, making it prone to breakage.
  
• It exhibits poor chemical resistance and weather resistance.
  
• High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) is a modified form of PS that incorporates polybutadiene rubber during polymerization to enhance impact strength.
  
• PS can also be modified into EPS, commonly known as foam.
  
• PS (Polystyrene) plastic is hard, transparent, odorless, and burns with an unstable flame.
  
• It is colorless, easily customizable in appearance, and can be processed through pressing and injection molding (processing temperature is about 180-200°C).

3. Caution When Using:

❖ PS plastics contain toxic substances such as Styrene and Benzene, which are suspected carcinogens and neurotoxins harmful to humans. When hot foods and liquids come into contact with Styrofoam, some toxins may be absorbed into our bloodstream and tissues.

❖ Therefore, it’s best not to use PS plastic for storing hot foods (above 70 degrees Celsius), as high temperatures can release significant amounts of Monostyrene, potentially damaging the liver. Avoid using PS plastic trays for storing boiling water, greasy foods, pickles, or vinegar.
