1. What is Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel?

▶ Hot-dip galvanization, a corrosion protection method since 1836, involves applying a thin zinc layer over a thicker base metal to shield it from the environment. Over the past 180 years, its demand has surged, particularly in construction, transportation, and products requiring higher protection standards.
2. Characteristics of hot-dip galvanized steel pipe:
▶ Plating Thickness: 40 - 80μm (contrasting cold zincs 20 - 30μm)
▶ Coating Surface: Rough, with a distant "silver" luster. Coating consistency varies.
▶ Durability: Yield strength 195 MPa, tensile strength 320 ÷ 520 MPa. Lifespan ranges: 50+ years in rural settings, 20 years urban/sea areas.
▶ Cost-Effective: A viable alternative to austenitic stainless steel or aluminum for corrosion prevention.
3. Standard of Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Pipe:
▶ The most popular standards are the American ASTM standard, British BS EN standard, ISO standard, and Japanese JIS standard. Additionally, there are Vietnamese standards tailored to our countrys climate conditions.
▶ ▶ British BSI standards for hot-dip galvanized steel pipes comprise:
- BS EN 10255:2004 - Technical standards for welded steel pipes
- BS 1387-1985 - Standard for welded steel pipes
- BS 4504 - Flange standard
- BS 21 - Thread standard
▶ ▶ American Standard ASTM:
- ASTM A53/A53M-10 - Pipeline specifications
- A530-A530/A530M-99 - Technical standard for general requirements of carbon steel and special alloy pipes
- ISO 9001 quality management system standard issued by the International Organization for Standardization
▶ ▶ Japanese Standard JIS:
- JIS G3444:2015 - Standard for carbon steel pipes for general structure
- JIS G3466:2015 - Standard for carbon steel square and rectangular pipes for general structure
▶ ▶ Vietnamese Standards:
- TCVN 5408:2007 (ISO 01461:1999) - Standard for hot-dip zinc coating on the surface of cast iron and steel products, with technical requirements and test methods
- TCVN 7665:2007 (ISO 1460:1992) - Standard on Metallic Coatings, covering hot-dip zinc coating on ferrous materials and determining coating mass per unit area
- TCVN 12514:2018 - Standard for steel with zinc coating used for concrete reinforcement
4. Advantages of Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Pipe:
▶ Corrosion Resistance: Zinc layer forms ZnO, Zn(OH)2, and protective basic zinc carbonate film, preventing corrosion.
▶ Strength: Durable, sustainable for up to 50 years due to corrosion resistance.
▶ Coating Toughness: Endures transportation, impact without peeling.
▶ Full Protection: Even in recesses, sharp corners, steel is fully galvanized.
▶ Time and Cost Efficiency: Faster than other methods, economical with comparable anti-corrosion performance.
