SNG (SYNTHETIC NATURAL GAS) SYSTEM
The SNG (Synthetic Natural Gas) system, also known as the Mixer System, is designed to create a fuel with a Wobbe index equivalent to natural gas (low-pressure NG, CNG, LNG) by mixing gases.
Typically, the natural gas in Vietnam has a Wobbe index of about 50-50.8 MJ/m³, depending on the gas composition in different regions like Phu My GDC, Nhon Trach GDC, or Thai Binh GDC.
To calculate the Wobbe index, the calorific value and specific gravity of the gas are needed. In practice, software can be used to determine the Wobbe index after entering the gas composition.
❖ Why is the SNG System Needed?
- Equivalent Fuel: The SNG system mixes LPG with air or other gases at a calculated ratio to achieve a Wobbe index equivalent to natural gas.
- Backup System: The Mixer Station acts as a backup when natural gas (NG, CNG, LNG) supply is reduced, in case of system failures, or during maintenance.
- Primary Fuel: It serves as the primary fuel source when burners are configured for natural gas but the area lacks a natural gas supply.
❖ Components of the SNG System
The LPG/Air Mixing Station, also known as the SNG Station or Mixer System, includes the following main components:
- LPG source: Can be LPG C3/C4, pure propane, or pure butane.
- Mixing gas source: Typically compressed air or inert gas (N2) to reduce the calorific value of LPG.
- Mixer station: For both LPG and Air streams.
